MARKED (Book 1)

The Tournament’s Price

The first book in a medieval action/adventure series called MARKED.

Prince Gage, second-born son of Edelmar’s king, has gained fame and fortune as an undefeated jouster. Knighted young, Gage is audacious on the tournament field but is daunted by his responsibilities of leadership. He’s always been content to follow his father’s and his older brother’s leading, but more is expected of him. Will he be able to prove himself capable?
When a ruthless thief at a tournament makes Gage his next target, it changes everything. The lords of Edelmar thought defeating the blue-eyed thief would end their troubles, but Gage discovers the Blue Crow’s small group of rebels are just the beginning of what is brewing beneath the submissive bows and polite smiles of the common people.

This series is uniquely not fantasy. Knights, princes, and lords embody strength and bravery but not through magic or powers. As normal and real as the rest of us, medieval young people had to train to gain strength and had to learn such character qualities as courage and responsibility. This series brings forth these struggles in a compelling story that explores the challenges of facing the weight of life’s responsibilities, the fear of failure, and the sometimes overwhelming possibilities of one’s own potential.

Researching this series . . .

I have been researching the medieval time period since 2012, which is when this series idea first came to life. Developing and plotting the series has taken place in between a lot of other events and projects, but eventually I had enough time to actually devote to creating it. In the course of researching and writing it, I even got to visit a real medieval castle in Carcassonne, France.

A big part of who Prince Gage is revolves around jousting and tournaments, which believe it or not you can actually still attend real tournaments and joust today. In fact, while researching for this series, I got to interview someone who is right now in training to be a knight. There are a lot of reenactment groups around the world who are still very interested in preserving the history of the medieval age and the medieval skills like heraldry, weaving, cooking, carving, sword making, etc .

A lot of times I think we think of the medieval time period as primitive, but they built and developed some pretty crazy cool things like the treadwheel crane. Here’s a video of how the crane works. It was a lot of fun getting to learn about things like this while writing The Tournament’s Price. The series is set in a fictional location and time period, but its flavor is truly medieval, which I hope you enjoy.
