  1. The Eighth Ransom has to be one of the best books that I’ve ever read. It kept me reading past midnight! One of the things that I really liked about the layout of the book were the short chapters. Most of the chapters leave you hanging and make you want (or need!) to keep reading. The book is very wholesome yet dives into deep topics that catch the interest of an older audience. I would recommend this book for ages 13-17, and for both girls and boys.

  2. I loved this book! It had me at the edge of my seat in suspense, and made me stay up late reading it wondering what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed the differences in the characters and how they looked past them to work together. I’m looking forward to reading more of Given Hoffman’s books in the future!

  3. Looking for a well written page turner with some surprising plot twists? Here it is. I loved getting to know the characters and watching them grow individually and as a team. You’ll appreciate the strong moral values represented. I won’t tell you how late I stayed up to finish it. It was worth it.

  4. I LOVED THE EIGHTH RANSOM! It had great topics and it kept me very interested. The short chapters made me want to read more and all of the suspense was amazing. It was one of the best books i have read in quite some time. It had great unexpected twists and i loved getting to know all the characters better. I could hardly put the book down and would stay up late reading. It was a great book that i would recommend for ages 13-18 for both boys and girls.

  5. I absolutely loved this book! It kept it me reading until after midnight! I love the topic of the book and how it takes a very dangerous situation to bring all the characters together. Like I said before I absolutely love this book and can’t wait for the next one!

  6. We purchased this book yesterday afternoon at the Iowa Homeschool conference. My son finished reading it today. He couldn’t put it down!

  7. I purchased this book at MACHE this last spring for my then 12 yr. old son. He read it right away and loved it. He told me I had to read it, so I did and I couldn’t put it down! Very well written and I really appreciate the author’s mission to write books like this one for teenagers. We can’t wait for the next book!

  8. The Eighth Ransom was an amazing book full of different twists and turns. The structure was perfect and it even dealt with many major issues in today’s world without it seeming rushed or out of place. The Eighth Ransom also proves that you don’t need romance or profane and inappropriate content for a good novel.

  9. Thorough out the book I had a hard time following the supporting characters, because there was so many of them. That was basically my only problem with it. The book had a good story line, and I had several moments where I laughed out loud. The characters set aside their differences to survive. I had never read Given Hoffman’s books and I would recommend her to anyone who likes mystery books. I would read other books by her as well.

  10. What a great story!! Definitely recommend. The characters are well thought, and their different backgrounds are to. Very suspenseful! It’s kind of getting hard to find great books like this! I would definitely read more!

  11. The Eighth Ransom by Given Hoffman is an exciting book about teamwork, loyalty, perseverance, and discovering God to be Lord and Savior. I got it a couple of years ago at a conference, and I’ve read it many times since. The characters are well thought out and and plot is deep. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

  12. When I bought this book at a conference I didn’t know if I would like it. I usually don’t like fiction, but I really enjoyed this book! It was fast paced, well researched, and the plot wasn’t as predictable as some books. The amount of research that had gone into even little things really brought the book to life. Overall, the character’s were interesting and relatable. The primary thing that I didn’t like about this book was that one character was a little bit too perfect. That being said, I liked it that two of the character’s in particular had a very clear character arc. This was a great book that was interesting and exciting but also had a purpose, made me think, and addressed topics that are very relevant in todays world. I definitely recommend this book!

  13. I love everything about The Eighth Ransom! I highly recommend The Eighth Ransom for anyone 12 and older (adults too), homeschooled or not. I have owned the book less than 7 months and have read it multiple times. It has adventure, suspense, and faith.
Given makes her characters real- with real struggles and hurts. She brings up issues that permeate our world today and that many teenagers deal with. These issues include how the world was really made, abortion and the value of life, Deism versus a loving God, forgiveness, knowing your parent loves you, sacrificial love, courage, honor, and teamwork.
The teasing, nicknames, and even arguments give the feeling that these 8 kids are a family and that they will work together to survive.
I love that the title has a dual meaning, both physical and spiritual. Trent doesn’t have a ransom to free him since he wasn’t supposed to be kidnapped but Jesus was the Eighth Ransom. He paid the price to set everyone free- not just to free Trent from the terrorist but to free him from eternal death.
Ashley struggled to know hat God wanted her to do after high school and then why He let this event happen that hurt so many people. She comes to realize that God wants to use her in her weakness and pain to help others through similar situations.

  14. If I tried to mention everything I liked about this book then this review would be an hour long, and I’d probably spoil it too!! Given is an amazing author and her books show it. The characters are very well written and the plot is suspenseful and exciting, it is literally the best book I have ever read, I promise you will not be disappointed, it even has evidence for creation!
    Five stars!!

  15. I enjoyed this book a lot. It was thrilling, but not over the top filled with suspense. It also had great plot and character development, which I always appreciate. The characters themselves were relatable, understandable, and easy to like or, in some cases, hate. I have and will recommend this book to any teen or young adult looking for a stand-alone suspense novel or even just an enjoyable read. I can’t wait to see what other books Given Hoffman puts out and hope that she would write another stand-alone suspense novel.

  16. I’ve grown up reading books about kidnappings, but they were always sugarcoated. Kidnapping is truly terrifying, something I never fully grasped until I read the Eight Ransom. Usually the kids disobey their parents and end up getting kidnapped (kind of like what happened to Trent). But getting snatched put of nowhere (like what happened to Ashley) is something that no-one talks about. In a world where authors are just looking for a good plot that will sell, they don’t realize that they are normalizing kidnapping. The Eight Ransom doesn’t normalize kidnappings, it paints a realistic picture of the terror, trauma, and the aftermath. But it also shows how God is always in control and how God redeems every situation in which we find ourselves. The Eight Ransom is good because of the Christian morals it was written on. This is such a great find! Thank you so much, Given, for writing a book that is realistically gripping and points to Christ the entire time! I highly recommend this book!
